There are so many choices!!!
Where to start?? Let’s begin with the meaning of denier. “Denier” is a unit of measure first used in the French silk industry to determine the fineness of the thread. The word comes from an old French silver coin. Silver wears down so the best way to know how much silver is really there is to weigh it. They do the same with thread. The thicker the thread, the higher and heavier the denier. Nylon stockings are 15 denier. Our toughest turnout blanket, the “WeatherBeeta Taka”, has a 1680 denier ballistic nylon outer shell, just about indestructible.
Turnouts vs. Stable
Turnouts are made for just that, turning your horse outdoors in any kind of weather. They are waterproof and breathable. The higher the denier, the more rip resistant the material, although it takes a determined horse to rip even the 600 denier blankets. They generally have a tail flap, leg straps, and a shoulder gusset for freedom of movement.
Stable blankets and sheets are not waterproof, and designed to be worn indoors. They are more comfortable for the horse because they are not so heavy. They can be worn under a turnout sheet. Very handy in keeping your horses coat clean, and the nylon ones will polish the hair coat and put a shine on.
Turnout Sheets vs. Turnout Blankets
What’s the difference?? Turnout sheets are lined, but have NO insulation. The lining can be mesh, smooth cotton or nylon. The lining is important in keeping your horse dry. It creates a layer of air between your horse and the outer shell. This will help the sheet stay breathable and your horse dry. They will keep your horse warm on a cool rainy day.
Turnout blankets are designed for winter conditions. Cold, rain, wind, sleet, snow. These blankets have polyfill insulation, the higher the number the warmer the blanket. Waterproof and breathable, they all have taped seams.
Which Sheet for My Horse?
Stable sheets are made of a poly cotton blend or all cotton and will keep your horse warm on a cool night, and his coat clean.
Nylon sheets also provide light warmth, think of them like a windbreaker. Nylon also polishes the hair coat for a "show horse shine".
Dress sheets are usually made of polar fleece, provide medium warmth. The make a great cooler, polar fleece whicks away moisture to dry your horse out fast. You can use them to layer under another blanket on those extra cold nights.
